Yellow-striped Brushfinch

A fairly large bird of lowland and foothill forest. Small for a hornbill. Bill fairly short with black bands, and with bare skin around the eyes and chin. Male has pale underparts and head with a black cheek, a pale buffy tail with a black tip, and pale blue facial skin. Female is entirely black with a buffy band through the center of the tail and darker blue facial skin. Rufous Hornbill occurs in some of the same areas, but has a red bill. Samar Hornbill’s voice is a short, medium-pitched honk, reminiscent of a squeaky toy, often given in rapid series.

Brownish bird that is shaped like a large dove. Male has a black front and plain wing with three black bars; female has fine black markings across the back. Long pointed wings power high direct flight. Found in dry, open habitats in western Madagascar, at low and middle elevations. Feeds in open fields, and makes long flights every day to traditional drinking spots, which are often visited with great punctuality. Call is an odd dry chuckling, given frequently in flight. 

Distinctive brownish flycatcher found in Borneo’s central and southeastern highland forests. Brown above and gray below, with a warm coffee-brown face and eye-catching white eyebrows and throat patch. Also note warm rufous tones in the wings and tail. Forages close to or on the ground, often with mixed-species flocks. Can be quite tame and allow close approach. Gives a bubby rattling trill when alarmed.
