Slaty-breasted Rail
Lewinia striata
Combination of intricately barred back and belly, gray throat and breast, and rufous crown and nape separates this furtive bird from similar species. Like many other rails, moves about unobtrusively in dense vegetation in marshes, wet grasslands, flooded pastures, and mangroves. Occasionally forages in the open in close proximity to cover, especially in early morning and evening. Calls include a dry, series of kick notes that increase in tempo; a dry, scratchy, metallic “krrrr”; and single, short clucks.

Chotoy Spinetail
Schoeniophylax phryganophilus
Unique spinetail with a rather long spiky tail and a yellow and black chin. The Chotoy Spinetail also has a rusty crown and shoulders, a buffy breast and flanks, dark streaks on the back, and a white eyebrow. Found in open areas with scattered trees and shrubs, riparian thickets, and second growth. Sings a series of low-pitched “cho” notes that accelerate toward the end.

Western Striolated-Puffbird
Nystalus obamai
Chunky, bull-headed puffbird of lowland and foothill rainforest east of the Andes to far western Brazil. Underparts are pale with dark, vertical streaks. Also note stout, yellowish bill, and brown cap and back. Very similar to Eastern Striolated-Puffbird (limited overlap in Brazil and possibly Bolivia), but has thicker streaks on underparts. Singles or pairs perch motionless for long periods high in the canopy; usually heard before seen. Typical song is a whistled “wip wip-whirrr?, whurrrr”, with the other member of the pair responding at slightly different pitch.

Bornean Peacock-Pheasant
Polyplectron schleiermacheri
With his iridescent pale blue crest, bright orange facial skin patch, and luminous blue spots along his wings and broad fan-shaped tail, the eccentric-looking male is unmistakable if seen well. Female is less eye-catching: warm brown all over with smaller, darker spots. Inhabits primary lowland and hill forest, favoring areas with ridges. Typically quiet; occasionally gives loud, harsh calls.
