Rwenzori Turaco
Gallirex johnstoni
Atypical and beautiful multi-colored turaco. Like other turacos, shows large crimson wing patches in flight. Found in montane forest and secondary growth. Acts like a typical turaco, bouncing through the trees, and flying occasionally with short bursts of wingbeats and long glides. Found in pairs and sometimes small groups. Gives “kow” calls like other turacos, but also makes odd squirrel-like scolding calls and a 3-part “laser-gun” call.

Plush-crested Jay
Cyanocorax chrysops
Large and striking dark blue jay found in various forest and woodlands types where it is often encountered in noisy groups of up to a dozen or so. Note the odd, rounded black crest, black head and breast that contrasts with yellow eyes and a bright blue eyebrow and nape. The lower belly and the lower half of the tail are white while the upperparts are dark blue.
Red-fronted Coua
Coua reynaudii
Dark, long-tailed, long-legged understory bird. When seen well, the dark-green back, red cap, and blue facial skin are distinctive and beautiful. Very shy and skulking; usually found in the densest tangles of the understory of eastern rainforest. The most common calls are an incredibly long, dry rattle, and a loud single “keeeeow”. Slightly smaller than Red-breasted Coua, with red on the cap rather than the breast. Much longer-tailed than forest-dwelling rails.
Indian Swiftlet
Aerodramus unicolor
A small, brown, nondescript swift with a shallow tail fork. Upperparts are darker brown than the underparts, while the rump is marginally paler. Very similar otherwise to the more widespread Asian Palm-Swift, except that Indian Swiftlet lacks the latter’s longer, deeply forked tail. Mostly seen in the hills, where it breeds in caves, but can disperse to the plains during monsoons or immediately after summer showers, hawking insects in mixed flocks of swifts.
