Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo

A chunky slate-gray and white bird with a heavy, pale blue bill. A gregarious bird of forest and forest edge in the lowlands and mountains. Usually encountered in small groups, either gliding above the canopy or perched high up on dead snags, from which it regularly sallies. Note the white back, which separates this species from White-breasted Woodswallow. Ivory-backed also prefers forested areas, avoiding extensive open country. Calls include a series of metallic chirps.

Slender inhabitant of open wooded areas in lowlands and foothills. Smartly-patterned black-and-white male can be difficult to distinguish from Sulawesi and Pied Trillers where ranges overlap, but note his extremely narrow white eyebrow and less extensive white on the wing. Female, with her dirt-brown back, is fairly distinctive among trillers. Forages in trees and on the ground; often uses exposed perches. Gives a fast, high-pitched series of “tchew” notes, often with a quiet introductory note.

Large, brown-backed, orange-breasted thrush with bold white wingbars. Found in the understory of montane forest. Generally shy and scarce. The song is a musical and typically thrush-like, a chatty and cheerful series of whistles and chuckles. The call is a very thin, rising trill. Very similar to Orange Ground-Thrush, but has a different pattern on the head: an orange crown, a plain face, and a complete white eye-ring.
