Wood Duck

Breeding males are stunning with ornate, colorful patterns visible up close; appears dark overall at a distance. Females gray-brown with thin white eyering. Crest on head. Found in wetlands and flooded woods. Flies through trees with exceptional maneuverability, thanks to its long tail. Often shy and quick to flush. Call is a loud, screeching whistle.

The wood duck is a medium-sized perching duck. A typical adult is from 47 to 54 cm (19 to 21 in) in length with a wingspan of between 66 and 73 cm (26 and 29 in). The wood duck's weight ranges from 454–862 grams (16.0–30.4 oz). This is about three-quarters the length of an adult mallard. It shares its genus with the Asian mandarin duck (Aix galericulata).<p>The adult male has stunning multicolored iridescent plumage and red eyes, with a distinctive white flare down the neck. The female, less colorful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. The speculum is iridescent blue-green with a white border on the trailing edge.<p>The male's call is a rising whistle, jeeeeee; the females utter a drawn-out, rising squeal, do weep do weep, when flushed, and a sharp cr-r-ek, cr-e-ek for an alarm call.

The birds are year-round residents in parts of its southern range, but the northern populations migrate south for the winter. They overwinter in the southern United States near the Atlantic Coast. 75% of the wood ducks in the Pacific Flyway are non-migratory. Due to their attractive plumage, they are also popular in waterfowl collections and as such are frequently recorded in Great Britain as escapees—populations have become temporarily established in Surrey in the past, but are not considered to be self-sustaining in the fashion of the closely related mandarin duck. Along with the mandarin duck, the wood duck is considered an invasive species in England and Wales, and it is illegal to release them into the wild. Given its native distribution, the species is also a potential natural vagrant to Western Europe and there have been records in areas such as Cornwall, Scotland and the Isles of Scilly, which some observers consider may relate to wild birds; however, given the wood duck's popularity in captivity, it would be extremely difficult to prove their provenance. There is a small feral population in Dublin.

Brown-backed Mockingbird
Mimus dorsalis
Handsome mockingbird found in scrubby areas in the high Andes. It has rich brown upperparts, mostly white underparts, and a white eyebrow. The brilliant white wing stripes and outer tail feathers flash conspicuously in flight, and help to separate it from the relatively plain Patagonian Mockingbird. Similar to White-banded Mockingbird, but tends to be browner (less gray) on the back and crown, has smaller white wing stripes, and is normally found at much higher elevations. It has a huge vocal repertoire ranging from shrill whistles to harsh churrs and metallic trills.
Citrine Wagtail
Motacilla citreola
Widespread and fairly common over much of Asia; rare to western Europe. Breeding males spectacular and unmistakable: bright yellow head and body contrasts with black collar and gray (most of range) or black (central and southern Asia) back. Females and non breeding males less conspicuous, dull yellow with dark cheek patch isolated in yellow face and a gray crown and back. Juveniles have same cheek pattern but are dingy grayish overall without yellow tones (or just faint yellow face). White wingbars conspicuous in all plumages; also note pale lores. More tied to water than Eastern Yellow, Western Yellow, or White Wagtail; usually seen at marshes and lake edges. Contact call "tsriip," harsher than Eastern and Western Yellow Wagtail.
Stout-billed Cuckooshrike
Coracina caeruleogrisea
A large bird of forest interior from the lowlands to mid-mountains. Long tail, thick bill and an overall slate gray plumage with black wing edge and tail tip. Male has a black mark between the eye and bill. Similar to several gray-colored cuckooshrikes and cicadabirds but most of these have thinner bills. Boyer’s also has a stout bill, but Stout-billed is much larger. Voice, a loud, grating, nasal, 2-note “raaooo-raahhh!” with the first note falling and the second, rising then falling.
