Snowy-throated Kingbird

Small flycatcher of open and semiopen scrubby habitats in the Andes. Often in rocky valleys and gullies, and agricultural terraces in and around villages. Usually seen as singles or pairs, perched quietly at low to middle levels in bushes, dropping to the ground to snatch prey. Note its fairly long tail, which is often flicked upwards when perched. Combination of bold white eyebrow and overall gray plumage is distinctive. Compare with smaller Piura Chat-Tyrant, where the two species overlap locally in Peru.

A medium-sized night bird of lowland forest on Palawan, where it is the only frogmouth. Male is gray-brown and lightly speckled above with barred flight feathers and tail. Female is more rufous-brown with less patterning. Both sexes have a broken white line above the shoulder and are heavily scalloped with white on the belly, more sparsely on the chest. Note the prominent whiskers around the face. More often heard than seen. Voice is a raspy, whistled “reh-weuu!” with the second note falling.

A colorful fruit-dove with green wings and back, an orange belly patch, and a silver chest. Striking white cap with a reddish or yellowish streak behind the eye is diagnostic, though no other fruit-doves share its range. An adaptable species found at all elevations. Call consists of typical dove-like “coo” notes rising then falling, sounding mournful.
