Cape Verde Storm-Petrel
Hydrobates jabejabe
Very similar to Band-rumped and Monteiro's Storm-Petrels, and closely related to those taxa. Breeds only on Cape Verde islands. There are no published field identification features to tell them apart. However it appears that its upperwing pattern is more contrasting and the rump patch is broader. Breeds in burrows and crevices on islands. Burrow calls are different from Band-rumped and Monteiro's by being extremely long, without pauses.

Rufous-winged Philentoma
Philentoma pyrhoptera
Ambiguous-looking forest-dweller; loosely resembling a cross between a monarch and a paradise-flycatcher. Some males have warm rufous brown wings and clean white bellies, but--despite the name--some are gray-blue all over. Female is grayish above with an off-white throat and rufous wings and tail. Typically hunts from a perch at lower to middle levels of lowland and hill forests. Song is a pair of whistled notes: “whee-wheeep”. Also chatters harshly.

Greater Prairie-Chicken
Tympanuchus cupido
Plump, chickenlike bird found in grasslands. Body and wings entirely barred brown with paler buffy throat. In spring, males gather at display site and dance to attract females: look for them hunched over with earlike feathers protruding from the head and yellowish-orange skin exposed on the neck. Inconspicuous and difficult to find away from display sites. Separate from Lesser Prairie-Chicken by range; averages slightly darker and larger than Lesser. Darker than Sharp-tailed Grouse with more heavily barred sides and belly; rounded tail.

Mottled Petrel
Pterodroma inexpectata
A medium-sized petrel with a distinctive dark patch on the belly. Slightly larger and heavier-bodied than Black-winged, Bonin, and Cook’s Petrels. Regularly seen offshore from boats and sometimes from shore.
