Gosling's Bunting
Emberiza goslingi
A bunting with cinnamon underparts, black-and-brown mottled upperparts, and a black-and-orange bill. The male’s head is boldly striped black-and-white and the throat is pale gray. The female’s head is less contrasting, with gray and buff stripes, and the throat is streaked blackish-brown. Juvenile is duller than adult. Prefers rocky outcrops, quarries, and gullies in arid and moist savanna and semi-desert, favoring open ground. Often found in pairs. It is often detected by its grating song. The similar Cinnamon-breasted Bunting differs from Gosling’s Bunting by having a black (not gray or blackish-brown streaked) throat and less rusty wings; birds in northern Ethiopia/Eritrea may be part of a hybrid swarm. House Bunting has a streaked (not solid) throat and breast.

Tundra Bean-Goose
Anser serrirostris
Rather large, dark gray-brown goose with typically small orange patch on bill, and orange legs. In flight lacks contrasting pale forewing areas of Pink-footed Goose and Graylag Goose. Not always safely told in the field from Taiga Bean Goose, but Tundra averages a shorter and thicker bill, vs. the longer, more sloping bill of Taiga. Breeds on tundra and winters in farmland and wetlands, where it associates readily with other geese.
Javan Flowerpecker
Dicaeum sanguinolentum
Small and stout forest-dweller that hops and buzzes about in the canopy like a large, active insect. Note male’s iridescent dark blue back, bright red chest, and black line extending down the white belly. As with many other flowerpeckers, the female is considerably duller, with a red rump patch being the only patch of bright color on her otherwise gray-brown plumage. Endemic to Java, where it inhabits montane and foothill forests. Calls include a short buzzy katydid-like series, high-pitched whistles, and dry clicks.
Blue-throated Macaw
Ara glaucogularis
Large macaw endemic to flooded grasslands of El Beni, Bolivia (Llanos de Moxos). Breeds in cavities in tall palms, and threatened by habitat loss. Most of the population is highly localized into a few breeding and foraging localities where grassland is less impacted by grazing. From sympatric (and much more common) Blue-and-yellow Macaw by blue throat and more extensive feathering on face.
