Rufous-brown Solitaire

Australia’s most familiar nocturnal bird. Note bright yellow eye and very large ‘frog-like’ bill with whiskers above only slightly banded. A master of camouflage, its shaggy plumage blends in with rough bark when roosting. Usually gray but some subspecies appear more rusty-colored. Present in a wide variety of habitats and common in suburban areas.

Long-winged nightbird with intricate brown and gray patterning. Very similar to Common Nighthawk, best distinguished by voice. Gives a rapid series of hard, buzzy notes: "drik-rik-rik-rik." A Caribbean species; in the U.S., found only on the Florida Keys. Prefers open areas with mix of grass, bare ground, and shrubs. Nocturnal but can be seen hunting around dawn and dusk, searching for insects in flight.

An easily overlooked flycatcher of lowland forests near large waterways, lurking in the lower parts of the forest in shady areas or near cover. Distinctively dark gray above and pale scalloped gray below, with a bright white throat and a bright white spot in front of the eye. Distinguished from other flycatchers by its affinity for water combined with its bright white lores. Song consists of long, deliberate buzzy whistles rising and falling in pitch: “Dzhreee? Dzhreeerr. Dzhreeeer?”
