White-bearded Manakin

White-bearded Manakin

Manacus manacus

Fairly common and widespread through much of South America. Males are distinctive with white throat, sharply defined black cap, black back and wings, and grayish belly. Legs bright orange-red. Females are duller olive with paler belly. Note red legs to help separate from other female manakins. Like most manakins, quite plump with a rather short tail and bill. Males gather at display sites in the understory of forest, where they make loud snapping noises with their wings. Also listen for a descending “peew” call. Away from display sites, rather inconspicuous and usually encountered singly, often around a fruiting tree.

Brooks's Leaf Warbler

Brooks's Leaf Warbler

Phylloscopus subviridis

Small warbler with a small bill and a large-headed appearance. Similar to other leaf warblers, but Brooks’s Leaf Warbler has the combination of a dark bill with a pale base, yellow on face and breast, yellow crown stripe, and at least one white wingbar (often two). Forages in a restless manner in the mid-canopy of spruce and fir forests in the summer and dry scrub forests in the winter. The distinctive song consists of high-pitched “zip-zip-zip-...” notes followed by a dry trill. The call is a short “chee-up” similar to that of a Greenish Warbler.

Desert Cisticola

Desert Cisticola

Cisticola aridulus

Small, pale brown, heavily-streaked cisticola. Plumage is darker in breeding plumage, washed-out in non-breeding plumage. Found in dry, open grasslands, including open stretches within savanna. Song is a mix of high-pitched peeps, scratchy lower notes, and “tic” notes. Extremely similar to Zitting Cisticola. Best distinguished by song, though subtle plumage differences include Desert’s more uniformly blackish tail and slightly streaked rufous rump.
