White-winged Scoter

White-winged Scoter

Melanitta deglandi

Large scoter, with distinctive white patch on wing. Dark chocolate-brown overall; males are darker than females and have small white mark under eye, dark knob on the bill, and pink bill tip. Females have two rounded white patches on face. At a distance, separated from Surf Scoter by more sloping head shape and white in the wing. Winters on coastal waters and large freshwater lakes. Occasionally found on large inland lakes during migration. Dives frequently, feeding on mollusks and crustaceans.

Madagascar Pratincole

Madagascar Pratincole

Glareola ocularis

Dark, long-winged, elegant bird that is halfway between a tern and a shorebird in shape. Nests along rocky rivers and coastlines, and sometimes sits in open fields. Spends much of its time feeding on aerial insects on the wing, and can be seen flying almost anywhere, often in small flocks. Pratincoles have a distinctive shape, and Madagascar Pratincole is darker than all other pratincoles within its range.

Phoenix Petrel

Phoenix Petrel

Pterodroma alba

A long-winged petrel, predominantly dark with a gleaming white belly. Throat patch often shows pale speckling, and birds sometimes appear distinctly pale-throated. Key identification feature is the prominent pale bar at the leading edge of the dark underwing between the elbow and body. Similar in pattern to Tahiti Petrel, but much smaller-billed and sometimes shows a pale throat. Usually flies with wings bent at the elbow, unlike the remarkably straight-winged Tahiti Petrel. Silent at sea.
