Sjöstedt's Owlet
Glaucidium sjostedti
A small owlet of lowland and foothill forest interior with intricate barring patterns over most of its body, including the buff-and-black underparts, the gray-and-white head, the rufous back, and the black-and-white wings and tail. Primarily nocturnal, but sometimes calls around first light. Distinctive song is a series of 4-8 trilled hoots.

Sjöstedt's barred owlet is a small owl, which has a brown head, neck and upper back densely marked with thin, white bars, while the remainder of the upperparts are deep reddish brown. There is extensive barring on the breast, where many dark brown bars are set against the light cinnamon-brown background; the barring becomes more diffuse towards the lower belly and vent. It has a distinctive face, with bold, white eyebrows above bright yellow eyes. Juveniles resemble the adults, but are generally paler, with a yellow-brown cast to the underparts and faint barring on the upper breast, darkening to become chestnut around the throat.<p>Sjöstedt's barred owlet has a distinctive call which can be rendered as "kroo-kroo-kroo", which is most often made around dawn and dusk.

Sjöstedt's barred owlet occurs in western Central Africa, from south-eastern Nigeria east through Cameroon to the Central African Republic, and southwards to Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, northern Congo and north-western and central Democratic Republic of Congo.<p>Sjöstedt's barred owlet is generally restricted to lowland primary forest; it avoids regions that are particularly damp, and the forest edges. It occurs at high altitude on Mount Cameroon.

Sjöstedt's barred owlet is a nocturnal species, hunting during the night in the forest understorey. Its diet consists of insects such as grasshoppers, but also spiders, crabs, mice, small snakes and nestling birds. When an owlet is disturbed from its daytime roost, it often results in mobbing behaviour by small birds, e.g. passerines. The breeding season of Sjöstedt's barred owlet is little known, although it lays in July in Gabon and young have been found in nests throughout much of the year in Cameroon. The males are territorial, calling loudly in order to attract females and to warn off potentially rival males. The nest is in a cavity or natural tree hollow, where the female lays a clutch of at least two eggs, with an incubation period of around one month.

LeConte's Sparrow
Ammospiza leconteii
This strikingly beautiful sparrow is found in wet meadows with tall grass. Look for the bright orange-buff face with a silvery cheek, spotted purplish-gray nape, and crisp black streaking on buffy underparts. Secretive; difficult to see well unless a male is perched up singing. Most similar to Nelson's Sparrow but typically found in slightly drier habitats; also note white stripe down center of crown on LeConte's. Sings a dry, hissing trill with sharp introductory notes.

Common, medium-sized mostly brown hummingbird of rainforest understory; also occurs in secondary forests. Moves constantly among widely separated patches of flowers, pausing en route to investigate brightly colored objects, including clothing. Typical call is a loud, single squeak, given as birds move between foraging spots. Displaying males occupy low perches and give a long series of squeaks while pumping their tails. Similar to several other hermits in general appearance and behavior; note lack of white tips on outer tail feathers, curved bill, and generally brownish coloration without strong facial markings.

Small rusty-brown bird with finely streaked plumage and long cocked tail, found in rocky areas and gorges around spinifex clumps of central Australia, including Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. Upperparts rusty brown, underparts slightly paler brown, the adult female showing a small rusty flank patch. Usually seen on the ground, scrambling around rocks and spinifex clumps. Much more solidly built than fairywrens, and with fine white streaks on head and chest.
