Chestnut Forest Rail
Rallicula rubra
A smallish rail of montane forest. Deep chestnut color. Male has a chestnut back with some black wing feathers, while the female has all black wings covered with white dots. Flutters wings when alarmed, flashing white dots. Forages very actively, even frantically, tossing leaves and moss aside to uncover invertebrates. Similar to White-striped and Forbes’s Forest-Rails, but Chestnut is smaller and the male has no white mark’s or fully dark wings, and female has spotted rear flanks. Calls, harsh raspy notes or squeaks.

Rufous-winged Sunbird
Cinnyris rufipennis
A small sunbird that is rare within its tiny central Tanzanian range. Both sexes have an unusual bright rufous panel in the wing. Males are dark bluish-purple above and gray below with a rufous band across the chest. Except for the wing panel, females are dull, with blurry spots on the underparts. Found locally in montane forest at middle elevations, mainly in the understory and at middle levels of the forest interior. The common call is a descending “tyeow,” and the song is a typical sunbird jumble.

Vanuatu Kingfisher
Todiramphus farquhari
A beautiful, boldly contrasting kingfisher with a blue head, a big black eye-mask, a white throat and neck, vibrant blue upperparts, and bright ginger underparts. Prefers undisturbed lowland forest. Often shy, sitting motionless in the canopy. Bright orange underparts separate it from other local kingfishers. Very vocal, giving a long series of chirping notes rising in pitch and speed.

Riverside Wren
Cantorchilus semibadius
Medium-sized wren with rufous upperparts and bold black-and-white barred underparts. Complex black-and-white face pattern. Sexes alike. Found in pairs or small groups, foraging in the lower levels of forests and shrubby edges.
