New Zealand Storm-Petrel
Fregetta maoriana
Small seabird endemic to New Zealand. Dark blackish-brown head, breast, upperparts, and tail. Rump and belly white with variable dark streaking running down from breast. Underwings have pale panel with broad dark edge. Note especially long legs, with feet trailing well behind the square tail. Thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 2003 on Little Barrier Island, which remains the only known breeding location. At sea, recorded mostly around New Zealand’s northern waters. Four similar species: Wilson’s Storm-Petrel has dark underparts and underwing; Black-bellied Storm-Petrel is larger, with shorter legs that still extend past tail and with a white belly that has a black line down the middle; White-bellied Storm-Petrel is larger, with feet that do not extend past tail; Gray-backed Storm-Petrel does not have a white rump.

Scaly-throated Honeyguide
Indicator variegatus
Large honeyguide with a finely-spotted throat and streaky breast. Large white patches at the base of the outer tail are conspicuous in flight. Found in dense woodland, thickets, and forest. Inconspicuous bird that is most often detected by call: a high-pitched, ascending, insect-like trill. Similar to Spotted Honeyguide, but there is little overlap in range, and Scaly-throated shows fine pale spots above the eye and bill.
Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle

Rare but spectacular eagle of lowland tropical forest. Very rarely seen perched, when black mask, orange-yellow base of bill, and short black crest are distinctive. In flight appears bright white below with a white head and blackish upperparts. The diagnostic, white leading edge of the inner half of the wing contrasts with the black upperside and can be seen in flight at long range. Does not call much when flying, unlike Black and Ornate hawk-eagles. Adult similar to pale immature Gray-headed Kite, but is larger and has orange base to bill.
Christmas Shearwater
Puffinus nativitatis
A medium-sized shearwater with uniformly dark brown plumage and no contrasting markings. Flies more steadily than most shearwaters and usually flies low over the water. Large numbers nest on most of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. A few pairs nest on Moku Manu Islet off the eastern coast of Oahu. Often seen from boats in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, but rarely on the main islands and rarely from shore. The voice, usually heard only at breeding colonies, is a low moan.
