Gray-headed Nigrita
Nigrita canicapillus
Pretty little black-and-gray nigrita. In most of the range, has a white line on the head and white spotting on the wing, but the subspecies in the west of the range is darker and lacks these. Found in rainforest, gallery forest, and edge and secondary habitats. Usually sings from the canopy, but sometimes feeds low. The song consists of mournful whistles in an up-and-down pattern. Similar to Pale-fronted Nigrita, but larger, and with more black on the forehead. Eastern and central African birds are further separated by their white wing spots.

Scaly-breasted Cupwing
Pnoepyga albiventer
Adorable tiny bird that loosely resembles a minute tailless wren. Warm dark brown above with rufous overtones, and scaled below; pale-morph birds have white edgings to black “scales,” while dark-morph birds have edgings that are coffee-stain tan. Smaller Pygmy Cupwing lacks the tan spots speckling the crown and neck of Scaly-breasted. Scaly-breasted inhabits dark, damp areas in dense forest, often around boulders, streams, and ravines. Song is a jumbled series of high-pitched melodic warbles, notably more complex than the song of Pygmy Cupwing.

Mindanao Scops-Owl
Otus mirus
A fairly small owl of montane forest on Mindanao. Dark brown on the upperparts, head, and chest, and pale gray on the lower chest and belly with black markings. Note the grayish crescents between the orange-yellow eyes. Occurs together with Giant and Everett’s Scops-Owls, but Mindanao is much smaller than Giant and slightly smaller and darker than Everett’s with shorter ear tufts. Song consists of two lazily-given whistled notes, “wiiii weeuu,” the second note slightly downslurred.

Red-crested Cardinal
Paroaria coronata
Unmistakable with its bright red crest and throat that contrasts with its gray back and white underparts. Note the pale horn-colored bill. Usually seen on the ground in semiopen habitat including agricultural lands and urban areas. In the nonbreeding season gathers in large flocks. The songs is a slow melodious whistle.
