Gray-headed Sunbird

A very small forest parrot endemic to the Sulu Archipelago. Overall green in color with a red forehead and rump, a dark bill, orange legs, and a small orange patch on the back of the head. Male has variable amounts of orange or red on the crown and a large orange chest patch, whereas the female has a bluish face. Note the long, pointed upper bill. Similar in length to Guaiabero, but longer-tailed and smaller-bodied. Voice includes a pulsing series of three or more notes: “tsik-tsik-tsik!”

A small rufous dove with conspicuous emerald-green wings, an orange bill, and a pale forehead that is white in males and gray in females. Juveniles have duller bare parts, some barring, and reduced iridescence. Typically seen singly, foraging on the forest floor or perched low in the understory. Pale patch is restricted to forehead, and this, in combination with brown back and brown tail, distinguishes this species from Asian and Pacific Emerald Doves. Song is a soft “hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo,” gradually rising and accelerating.

Small quail of dry habitats in interior valleys and on the Pacific slope. Favors brushy fields, thorn scrub with grassy areas and open pine woods. Often seen along quiet roadsides early and late in the day. Usually in small groups, which flush explosively with a loud whirring of wings. Males in Guatemala and El Salvador have white face and throat. Males in Honduras and Nicaragua have bold whitish face stripes and dark throat. All females have buff eyebrow and throat. Frequently found by hearing its loud whistled bob-WHITE! call.
