Louisiade Fantail
Rhipidura louisiadensis
Small, active songbird with long, pale-tipped tail and warm brownish-orange on the forehead, rump, and tail base. Grayish brown above and pale below overall, with a white throat and black-speckled breast. Frequently cocks and fans tail. Endemic to the D’Entrecasteaux and Louisiade Arcipelagos, off southeastern New Guinea, where inhabits wooded areas, particularly on small offshore islets. Listen for high-pitched, tinkling song. Formerly grouped with other closely related species under “Rufous Fantail.”

The Louisiade fantail was formally described in 1899 by the German orthithologist Ernst Hartert based on specimens collected by Albert Stewart Meek on Rossel Island within the Louisiade Archipelago to the southeast of New Guinea. Hartert placed it with the fantails in the genus Rhipidura and coined the binomial name Rhipidura louisiadensis. The Louisiade fantail was formerly considered to be a subspecies of the rufous fantail (renamed the Australian rufous fantail) (Rhipidura rufifrons) but is now treated as a separate species mainly based on the genetic differences. The species is monotypic: no subspecies are recognised.

Common Shelduck
Tadorna tadorna
Distinctive, large, rather gooselike duck of coastal wetlands, tidal mudflats, and nearby grassy fields. Striking plumage often looks simply black-and-white; at close range, head is deep glossy green, broad breast band dark rusty. Male has raised knob at base of red bill; juvenile duller overall, with whitish face and eyering. Less numerous and more local inland at lakes and along rivers. Often seen walking and grazing, at times in flocks.
Negros Scops-Owl
Otus nigrorum
A fairly small owl of lowland and foothill forest on the islands of Negros and Panay, where it is the only scops-owl. Dark brown above and pale gray below, with a rufous face bordered with a black line and a pale gray V-shape between the eyes. Occurs together with Luzon Boobook, but Negros Scops-Owl has orange rather than yellow eyes and lacks the brown-streaked chest. Song is a descending series of upslurred yelps.
Shelley's Greenbul
Arizelocichla masukuensis
Fairly small, dark, inconspicuous greenbul. The birds in Kenya and along the Albertine Rift have a gray crown, whereas the ones in central Tanzania and Malawi are uniformly olive-green. Found in the mid-story of montane forest. The western subspecies is known for its distinctive habit of creeping along branches like a woodpecker. Easily confused with other greenbuls, but slightly smaller and slimmer than other species in its range. Tree-creeping habits are distinctive when observed.
