Southern Scrub-Flycatcher

Sublegatus modestus

Small, dull flycatcher. Medium brown with a light yellow belly, and two whitish wingbars. Breeds in dry scrub and open woodlands across much of southern South America; also a common austral migrant into Amazonia, where it is found in secondary and successional growth. Compared to the similar Amazonian Scrub-Flycatcher, Southern has a brighter yellow belly, and crisper, brighter white wingbars.

Black-headed Woodpecker

Black-headed Woodpecker

Picus erythropygius

Eye-searingly bright woodpecker decked out in primary colors. Combination of black face, pale eyes, yellow throat, green wings, bright red rump, and white belly is unmistakable. Males also have a bright red crown patch. Prefers dry deciduous and coniferous forests, usually in the lowlands and foothills. Moves about in small noisy bands. Song is a rollicking, rhythmic series of rather dry, husky yelps, somewhat reminiscent of chickens or deranged laughing, that often starts up seemingly out of nowhere.

Gray-bellied Wren-Babbler

Gray-bellied Wren-Babbler

Spelaeornis reptatus

Elusive brown skulker with a pale throat and gray face. Dark edges to its back and crown feathers give it a scaly-looking quality. Forages on ground and in undergrowth, almost always under heavy cover and rarely emerging into the open. Extremely similar in appearance to Pale-throated, Chin Hills, and Long-tailed wren-babblers, but no range overlap. Song is a long ascending trill with a stuttering, bubbly quality to it.

Chuuk Flycatcher

Chuuk Flycatcher

Myiagra oceanica

Sadly, despite the name, not an ocean-going flycatcher; instead, this is a species of forest and forest edge habitats on Micronesia’s Chuuk Islands. Combination of bluish-gray head, pale orange throat and breast, brown-tinged wings, and slightly peaked head is unique on the islands. “Flycatches” from a perch, often close to the ground. Gives a variety of vocalizations, including a series of cheerful rising whistles, a repetitive squeaky series, a descending chatter, and hoarse meows.
