Yellow-bibbed Fruit-Dove
Ptilinopus solomonensis
A spectacular fruit-dove with a large, bright banana yellow patch on its chest and a hot pink patch on its chest and forehead. Otherwise mostly green, aside from yellow undertail. Appears to be more common on smaller atolls. Juvenile resembles the juvenile of Claret-breasted Fruit-Dove, but has yellow barring on the chest instead of a dull claret breast patch. Call is typically a long series of “woot” notes accelerating over time.

The yellow-bibbed fruit dove or yellow-banded fruit dove (Ptilinopus solomonensis) is a species of bird in the family Columbidae. It is found in the Bismarck and Solomon Islands archipelagos. The Geelvink fruit dove (P. speciosus) was formerly considered conspecific, but was split as a distinct species by the IOC in 2021. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Glaucous Tanager
Thraupis glaucocolpa
Medium-sized tanager with gray head and back, blue-gray chest, white belly, and aquamarine wings. Often seen singly or in pairs; usually less abundant than similar Blue-gray Tanager. Found mainly in dry areas with scrub or forest. Voice a soft and increasing “zee-ee-ee-EE-EET!” Distinguished from Blue-gray Tanager by grayer head and more contrasting bluish-green wings, as well as white belly and small black patch at base of flight feathers.

Breeding males are glossy black with purplish head and greenish sheen on body. Nonbreeding males have pale eyebrows and staring yellow eye. Females are plain dark brown and typically have dark eyes. Forages by walking on ground. Sometimes in mixed flocks with other blackbirds at feedlots. Also, walks along parking lots, golf courses, or roadsides. Females similar to Brown-headed Cowbird, but with longer, thinner bill and longer tail than cowbird.

Very striking cormorant readily identified by white neck. Locally common black-and-white cormorant of colder coastal waters. Often seen perched on inshore rocks and jetties, sometimes with Magellanic Cormorant. Nests colonially on low islands (rarely in lakes inland from coast) and jetties. Plumage varies regionally, with some birds black-faced and others white-faced; the two types breed together locally in the Strait of Magellan. Immature resembles adult but plumage duller overall, brownish above.
