Band-tailed Cacique
Cacicus latirostris
A large cacique, more reminiscent of an oropendola than most other cacique species. Highly local in western Amazonia, where it is mostly associated with flooded forests. Despite its size, more frequently heard than seen. Usually seen in mixed flocks with other species of caciques or oropendolas, as well as in small groups of 3–5 individuals, foraging. Notice the large, sharp white bill, brownish upper back and crown, and the yellow tail. Rest of the plumage generally glossy black or grayish.

Brown-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant
Hemitriccus obsoletus
Tiny flycatcher found in the understory of forests with bamboo. Plain olive-brown above and pale buff below. Note the buff spot in front of the eye. The similar Drab-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant has a white (not buff) spot in front of the eye and occurs at lower elevations than the Brown-breasted Pygmy-Tyrant. The song is series of “tic-tic-tic” notes.
Zebra Dove
Geopelia striata
A small, grayish brown dove with dark bars on the breast and back, and bare blue skin around the eye. The call is a rapid series of short “coos,” higher pitched and faster than Spotted Dove. Native to Southeast Asia, but introduced to many islands, including the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, Mauritius, and the Seychelles. It is generally quite abundant throughout both its native and non-native range, especially in urban and suburban areas; typically not found in dense forests.

Colinus leucopogon
Small quail of dry habitats in interior valleys and on the Pacific slope. Favors brushy fields, thorn scrub with grassy areas and open pine woods. Often seen along quiet roadsides early and late in the day. Usually in small groups, which flush explosively with a loud whirring of wings. Males in Guatemala and El Salvador have white face and throat. Males in Honduras and Nicaragua have bold whitish face stripes and dark throat. All females have buff eyebrow and throat. Frequently found by hearing its loud whistled bob-WHITE! call.
