Bundok Flycatcher

A huge, ground-dwelling cuckoo, bane of coyotes. Streaky brown overall with a very long tail and short, shaggy crest. Surprisingly iridescent in good light, with purple and green tones on wings and tail. Usually seen on the ground in dry desert habitats with patches of thick vegetation; sometimes perches on fences or rocks, especially when singing. Runs swiftly after large insects, lizards, and other prey. Unmistakable in most of range; overlaps locally with Lesser Roadrunner in west Mexico. Greater has more streaking on the throat and center of breast, instead of clear buffy on Lesser. Listen for very low-pitched cooing song.

A small flycatcher that is only found in bamboo patches in the lower levels of humid forests. Olive-green on the back, head and breast, with a distinctive yellow eyebrow wrapping around the eye, and a two-tone broad, flat bill. The belly is pale yellow and the wings are mostly dark but with two prominent cinnamon wingbars and cinnamon edges to the flight feathers. Rarely joins mixed-species flocks. The song is a very distinctive soft whistled “feeww-fuu,” repeated for long periods.

A trogon of lowland rainforests, almost always found in the forest interior, away from forest edges. Males and females have distinctive bare yellow facial skin below their eyes and between their eyes and bill. Both sexes have green backs and uppertails, red chests and vents, and finely barred wings. The species often calls motionless in the subcanopy, giving a series of 6-10 sad, descending coo notes, repeating these series 2-3 times per minute. Similar to the larger Narina Trogon, but Bare-cheeked Trogon is told apart by its song, its closed-canopy forest habitat, and the purely green tones on its head, back, and uppertail.
