分布与栖息地

This myna is endemic to the humid forests of hilly districts of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Its main habitat here is forest fringes, clearings, scattered areas of woodland and secondary forests, although it is sometimes found in primary forests. It is also present on the smaller islands of Lembeh, Muna and Buton; these are lowland islands and the habitat is mostly grassland savannah with patches of evergreen woodland in which the bird is primarily found.

American Herring Gull

American Herring Gull

Larus smithsonianus

Common and widespread large gull found throughout North America. Adults have a fairly pale gray back, pale eye, and dull pinkish legs. Takes four years for immatures to progress from mostly brown to fully white and gray adult plumage; intermediate plumages are often mottled and messy. Usually shows a dull pinkish base to the bill by the first winter, and develops a pale eye by the second winter. Some immature birds can fade to almost white, especially in their first or second summer, but they always show darker wingtips. Occurs inland and along the coast, frequenting fishing boats, beaches, lakes, and landfills. Often forms large flocks with other gulls.

Mottle-backed Elaenia

Mottle-backed Elaenia

Elaenia gigas

Large elaenia with a striking headdress. It inhabits lightly-wooded areas, such as overgrown clearings, forest edge, and river islands, along the eastern base of the Andes. Mostly gray and olive with a yellow belly and white wingbars. Spiky white crest is frequently held erect, and is bordered by dark forehead tufts that can look like little horns. Usually found hawking insects from a conspicuous perch, and gives short, burry calls.

Capped Heron

Capped Heron

Pilherodius pileatus

This gorgeous medium-sized heron is uncommon but widespread in lowlands of South America, barely extending into eastern Panama. Not likely to be mistaken: combination of silvery back, buffy neck and belly, black cap, and blue lores (sometimes radiant turquoise!) help distinguish this species from other herons. Also note the long white plumes on the back of the head. Occurs around swamps, forested ponds, and rivers, usually singly.
