Negros Jungle Flycatcher
Vauriella albigularis
A rare, medium-sized drab bird of lowland and foothill forest understory on Negros and Panay. Fairly large for a flycatcher. Dark brown above and on the chest, with a white throat and belly. Very similar to White-vented Whistler, but Negros Jungle-Flycatcher has a thinner bill and duller brown upperparts. Song is a descending sequence of high-pitched metallic notes, sometimes rising again at the end.

EBird describes the bird as "A fairly small bird. Rufous-brown on the wings, back, and tail, with a gray head, heavily-streaked pale underparts, and a black face and moustache stripe. Often found in mixed-species flocks. Somewhat similar to Stripe-headed rhabdornis and Grand rhabdornis, but smaller, with a white eye-ring rather than a black band through the eye. Voice includes a loud rattling trill and various quiet chips and squeals."

It is found in tropical moist lowland forests and the lower reaches of tropical moist montane forests typically below 1,000 meters above sea level, but has been recorded at up to 1,350 meters. It prefers primary forest but it has also been recorded in secondary forest and forest edge. It forages in the understorey and lower canopy usually below 10 meters above the ground.<p>The IUCN Red List assessed this bird as endangered with population estimated as 2,500 to 10,000 mature individuals. It is mainly threatened by habitat loss. Negros is one of the most deforested islands in the country, owing to illegal logging and conversion of forests into sugarcane plantations. An estimated 4% of Negros and 8% of Panay remained forested in 1988, most of it above 1,000 m.<p>Conservation actions proposed include

Black-crested Antshrike
Sakesphorus canadensis
A stunning antshrike, fairly common in open woodland and scrub in northern South America. Male has black head with white hind collar, white belly, brown back, and obvious white spotting on wing. Female is buffy overall with black tail, rufous crown, and buffy wingbars. Both sexes have a bushy crest, which is usually obvious. Some geographic variation across range: males in northern Colombia have grizzled white speckling on face; males in southern Venezuela and northern Brazil are much darker overall. Typically seen in pairs moving through the lower and middle levels; not particularly skulky.
White-winged Duck
Asarcornis scutulata
Odd shy duck with a distinctly ‘farmyard’ appearance. Distinctive white head can be quite clean-looking or densely speckled with black, depending on age and sex. When at rest or foraging, predominantly dark with white patches in the wings and on the head. Extensive white wing patches most noticeable when the bird is in flight. Inhabits quiet, secluded forest waterways. Retreats into undisturbed recesses of these waterways outside of dawn and dusk.
Helmeted Woodpecker
Celeus galeatus
Fairly large woodpecker. A usually rare inhabitant of extensive humid forests. Note cinnamon face, red head with a prominent crest, and white stripes on the side of the neck. Solid black back and wings, and heavily barred below with a pale rump. Males have a red moustache. A mimic of the much larger Robust Woodpecker.
