Blunt-winged Warbler

Rare and local, but fairly widespread from Honduras to Brazil. It has an unmistakable dumpy shape with a short tail and short legs. Brown above and gray below with richer rusty rump and blackish wings with obvious buffy wingbars. Male has a black throat, orange on female, both bordered by scaly pattern on cheek and neck sides. Note large booked bill. Occurs singly or in pairs on the ground within lowland forest, often in hilly areas. Flips over leaves when foraging. Listen for purring calls and a loud series of whistled notes.

Tiny short-tailed wren, plain warm brown with brighter buffy face and bold buffy eyebrow. Found in highland forests, where it can be seen sneaking up tree trunks and through vine tangles in search of insects. Often follows mixed feeding flocks. Similar to House Wren, but note warmer color and eyebrow. Listen for song, a high-pitched musical jumble of tinkling notes and short trills.

Tiny rufous hummingbird with a curved bill and a yellow lower mandible. Note the prominent white bases to the outer tail feathers. Males have black cheeks and throat, a broad pale eyebrow, a rufescent green back, and a rusty rump and underparts. Females have less black on the throat and more rufescent underparts. Occurs in humid forest, where it forages in the understory.
