Ashy Myzomela

Large pigeon from Enggano island off Sumatra. Other than deep green wings and back, predominantly pale gray, though slightly darker on the back of the neck. Distinctive pale pink wash across the chest. Inhabits wooded areas including edge and second growth near human habitation. No pigeons of a similar size and color occur on the island. Very vocal, with a wide repertoire, including a purring “krooooo”.

Elegant lapwing with a white stripe through eye (like a sunglass strap), a red wattle in front of the eye, and a thick and complete black breast-band. Smaller and shorter-legged than Masked Lapwing. Not generally an urban bird, it is more common inland. In more coastal areas it tends to be limited to areas with very short grass (e.g., airports, turf farms).

A rotund, earthen-toned ground-dweller, usually hidden deep in the undergrowth of dense forests, often in damp areas near rivers and streams. Very shy, rarely venturing out into the open, though can sometimes be seen on the sides of trails in the early morning. Male has a bright sky-blue crown and nape, tea-green wings, and an ochre-brown belly. Females have a brownish head and are a browner-toned shade of green on the wings. Song is far-carrying and simple: a loud, piercing “pee-ya!”
