Wallacean Drongo
Dicrurus densus
A large red-eyed, glossy-black bird with a heavy bill and diagnostic tail shape. Tail is fanned at the tip and shallowly forked, the outer tail feathers often broad-tipped and slightly upturned. Juvenile has brown eyes. Singles, pairs, or groups can be found in varied habitats from sea level to foothills, including mangroves, forests, woodlands, and plantations, typically perching high. The only drongo in its range, this species can be told from crows by its red eyes and its tail shape. A noisy, vocal bird with highly varied calls, including metallic fluty notes, guttural “grrt” notes, and upslurred “weeeet” whistles.

The Wallacean drongo has a very large range and does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion. Its extent of occurrence is greater than 20,000 km2. The population trend is not known but it is not believed to be declining sufficiently rapidly, and the population size is believed to be large enough for it to not qualify as Vulnerable using the population size criterion. For these reasons the species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Small jet-black seabird of coastal areas of the Pacific. Breeding plumage is black with bold white wing patch and bright red legs. Plumage changes dramatically in winter to whitish overall with dusky markings on body and black wingtips. Often found in shallower coastal waters than other alcids and regularly seen from shore. Dives to hunt for fish and invertebrates. Nests in crevice or burrow in a cliff or around large rocks.

Small brown bird with a bulbous gray head and staring white eyes. Typically moves about in small groups in low, dense areas such as scrubby patches and bamboo stands. Found at middle to upper elevations. Song is a distinctive and memorable series of three whistled notes: the first two notes ascend (second note noticeably longer), and the third note descends.
White-throated Antpitta
Grallaria albigula
Plump bicolored bird with long gray legs. Brown above and light gray below, with an orange-red head, a white throat, and a white eye-ring. Found in the understory of dense montane forest. Listen for a breathy two-noted whistle, the second note slightly higher than the first: “hoo, hoot?”
