Rock-loving Cisticola

An enormous pigeon of the southern lowland rainforests. Erect, mohicanlike crest is especially long at the back. Blue-gray body with maroon on shoulder and chest, up to the throat. Very large white patch can reach the edge of the wing. Has a deep-bellied appearance and twitches the tail nervously. Forages in small groups on the forest floor. Unmistakable and does not overlap with other crowned-pigeons. Call, loud 2-note booming, sounding like a beating heart.

Dark thrush of montane forests above 1000 meters, endemic to the Philippine island of Luzon. Not strikingly patterned; black with a dark brown head. Also note bright orange bill, eyering, legs, and feet. Forages at all levels of forest, picking fruit from the canopy and flipping leaves for insects on the forest floor. Song is repetitive but lovely, consisting of warbles and trills. Gives low chup notes and explosive rattling series, especially when alarmed.

Small hummingbird of tropical lowlands, favoring forest edge and semi-open areas, often in relatively dry habitats. Usually feeds rather low, and often inconspicuous. Both sexes habitually pump their forked tail while hovering, unlike most other hummingbirds found in the same areas. Solidly emerald-green male is distinctive. Combination of small size, rather short straight bill, face pattern (whitish eyestripe and broad dark mask), and tail wagging behavior help ID the female. Also note the dry chattering call, which may suggest the call of Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
