White-necked Myna

A chunky, heavy-billed forest songbird endemic to the island of Babar, located in eastern Indonesia between Timor and the Tanimbar Islands. Male is distinctive, with a black hood, a white throat, bright yellow underside, and dull green upperparts with a golden collar. Females are duller, with a brown head, white throat, yellow underparts, and dull olive-green upperparts. Wallacean Whistler also occurs on Babar, but females of that species are even duller than female Babar Whistlers, lacking the yellow belly. Vocalizations are poorly known, but likely include a bright, whistled song. Formerly treated as a subspecies of the more widespread Yellow-throated Whistler.

Common tanager, found in a variety of forest habitats. Usually seen from below, in which case it is best identified by uniform dark underparts with rufous lower belly and undertail coverts, and active behavior. The shining white rump can be seen from most angles on perched birds, even when high overhead. Found in tall rainforest, shorter-stature forests on sandy soils, and in disturbed areas. Groups move rapidly through treetops, usually with other species of small tanagers, feeding on fruit. Calls are indistinct chips, often given in rapid series in flight.

Scarce blackbird found only at higher elevations in the northern half of Colombia’s eastern Andes. It is quite slender and nearly all black, but has a maroon patch under the shoulder which is mostly hidden from view when the bird is perched. The dark bill and eye help to separate it from other similar species if the wing patch is not visible. Usually seen in the forest canopy and may congregate in large flocks. Song is a chaotic series of sharp, shrill notes mixed with clacking calls.
