Barred Rail
Gallirallus torquatus
A strikingly marked rail with a short cocked tail. Olive-brown above and heavily barred black-and-white below and on throat, with a rufous band across the chest. Face is strikingly black with a thick white stripe. Favors damp marshy grassland up to 1000 meters of elevation. Similar to Buff-banded Rail, but easily identified by its white facial stripe and lack of a white eyebrow. Often heard giving a loud, harsh croaking chorus.

The barred rail (Gallirallus torquatus) is a species of rail found across the Philippines, Sulawesi (Indonesia) and Salawati (western New Guinea). The species is common, but shy and difficult to see. The species was formerly sometimes placed in the genus Hypotaenidia. This rail is 32–35 cm (13–14 in) in length, and weighs 241–300 g (8.5–10.6 oz). There are several described subspecies: G. t. torquatus G. t. celebensis G. t. sulcirostris G. t. kuehni G. t. limarius Its diet includes (but is not limited to) eggs, such as Philippine megapode eggs.

A small flycatcher of forested habitats on Hawaii Island. Adults have white wingbars, rump, and tail tips. More common and widespread in native forest at higher elevations, but occurs at lower elevations in some areas where forest remains. Bold and curious; not afraid of people and may follow hikers. Often holds tail cocked up at an angle. Male song is a shrill “El-eh-pie-oh” for which the species is named. Both sexes give a variety of calls and scolding notes. May respond to pishing and squeaking.

Medium sized gray-brown owl with white underparts heavily streaked brown. Favors edge habitats and often roosts near creeks in woodlands. Feeds on small to medium sized mammals. Known for its diagnostic ‘woof-woof’ call which sounds like a dog barking.

Medium-sized harrier, flies with wings held in a V-shape, low over open fields and marshes, listening for rodents lurking below. Distinctive foraging behavior and conspicuous white patch on rump in all plumages. Five long primary ‘finger tips’ prominent in flight. Females and immatures are warm brown with streaky breasts. Adult male has plain mid-gray wings with black wingtips and paler belly.
