Black-crowned Scimitar-Babbler
Pomatorhinus ferruginosus
A large and vocal babbler of montane rainforest and shrubby edges. Note warm russet-brown body with bright rufous chest, white throat, white-bordered black mask, and a bright red bill. Forages actively in the dense midstorey, sometimes in mixed species flocks, and can be difficult to see well. Somewhat similar to Red-billed Scimitar-Babbler, but note Coral-billed’s deeper red, sturdier bill and rufous chest. Often gives harsh grating or excited chattering calls as well as soft, oriole-like notes.

Plain-winged Antshrike
Thamnophilus schistaceus
Even-colored antshrike of forest under- and midstory. Often travels with mixed-species flocks. Males are plain gray; females are tawny with olive underparts. Females have a more contrasting reddish cap than other female antshrikes. Heard more often than seen; listen for a series of accelerating “awh” notes terminating in a punctuated down-slurred note.
Assam Laughingthrush
Trochalopteron chrysopterum
Shy skulker with golden wings and a long golden tail. Eastern populations in China have a gray head and orange crown, while western populations in far northeastern India and Myanmar have a dark rusty head. Forages on the ground in small flocks in dense brushy understory, sometimes with other laughingthrushes. Song is a repetitive series of inflected notes, including a wolf-whistle-like “whi’wi’er-wee!” and a shorter “whi’wi’eeer!”
Tufted Flycatcher
Mitrephanes phaeocercus
Conspicuous, small crested flycatcher of highlands and foothills. Attractive cinnamon underparts, obvious tufted crest, and behavior are distinctive. Occurs in woodlands, forests, and plantations; also ranges into semiopen areas with trees and bushes, mainly in winter. Typically perches conspicuously at middle to upper levels and makes fluttering sallies for insects, often returns to the same perch again and again. Listen for a cheery, doubled “chewee-chewee.”
