Black Laughingthrush

A common tanager of savannas, forest borders, woodlands, and gardens. Often seen in pairs or with other species at fruiting trees, but usually not with mixed-species flocks. Males have a black face, throat, breast, and belly that is flanked by buffy sides. The crown and back are also buff and the wings and tail are dark-green. Females are buffy below with greenish back and wings, a pale throat, and a faint mask. The northern subspecies has a black mask (lacking the black throat and belly) with a violet gray throat and buffy belly.

A boldly patterned helmetshrike of lowland forests, often seen in small vocal groups. The bill is red and the head and chin are overall silvery gray. Has a black neck band and black wings, back, and tail. The chest is white and the belly, vent, and legs are reddish. Similar to the Red-billed Helmetshrike, with which it co-occurs locally in Cameroon, but Rufous-bellied Helmetshrike can be identified by its silvery gray chin and head (including below the eye) and the more extensive reddish coloration on its belly. Calls consist of liquid whistles and repeated grating “chew-two” calls. 

A relatively small, entirely dark petrel, appearing chocolate-brown or black, with a distinctive short-necked and cigar-shaped silhouette due to its tapering tail. Lacks the white underside of the otherwise similar Beck’s Petrel, and is significantly smaller than and lacks the white belly of Tahiti Petrel. Similar to Bulwer’s Petrel, but lacks the pale bars found in the upperwing of that species, appears shorter-necked, and does not hold its head high in flight. Overall flight style of Fiji Petrel is more acrobatic than that of Bulwer’s Petrel.
