Long-tailed Nightjar
Caprimulgus climacurus
A slim nightjar with a very elongated tail. Varies geographically; plumage usually rufous-brown or gray-brown, but locally dark brown. Both sexes have a large pale mark in the outer wing and along the sides of the tail, white in males and buff in females. Molting and non-breeding birds can have a shorter, though still elongated tail. Found in a wide variety of savanna and other open habitats. Similar to Slender-tailed Nightjar, but usually longer-tailed, and plumage is more rufous in the area where their ranges overlap. Call is a very fast, mechanical trill, higher-pitched than similar calls of other nightjars. Also gives a “chiow” call, often in flight.

Thick-billed Saltator
Saltator maxillosus
A grosbeaklike bird found in the canopy of montane forests; often accompanies mixed-species flocks. Note the broad white eyebrow and black mustache, which in males contrasts with a dark gray head and back and a buff throat and belly. Females have an olive-green back, a gray face, and a buff throat and belly. Females resemble Green-winged Saltator, but with a buff (not white) throat and a heavier bill.
Cape Eagle-Owl
Bubo capensis
Large, dark, powerfully-built owl. Has orange eyes and rufous tones to the plumage, on both the back and the underparts. Found in rugged and rocky terrain, mainly in the mountains, though down to sea level in southern Africa. Uncommon to rare across its range. Call is 2–3 deep hoots. Similar to Spotted Eagle-Owl, but larger, with bright-orange eyes, more rufous in the plumage, and coarser markings below.
Golden Tanager
Tangara arthus
Small tanager found in Andean foothills and subtropical zone from Venezuela to Bolivia. Mostly bright golden-yellow with isolated black ear patch, streaked back, and mostly black wings and tail. Some variation among populations, with northernmost birds showing a chestnut breast band and flanks. Sexes alike; young birds duller yellow. One of the most common tanagers in mixed flocks from around 900–2,200 m, in cloud forest, edges, and gardens.
