Forest Rock-Thrush

Large and striking vireo with stout hooked bill. Olive above and yellow below with distinctive gray-and-yellow head pattern and staring green eye. Sexes similar. Fairly widely distributed in northern South America, where it ranges from lowlands to subtropical forest, up to about 1,800 m. Not easy to see because it stays high in the canopy, where its repetitive whistle is often the harbinger of an incoming mixed-species flock.

Dark gray fantail with white-edged scaling on the breast. Also note white “eyebrows”, malar stripe, and trimming on the tail. No confusion species; the only fantail on Pohnpei. Inhabits brushy and wooded areas, sometimes near human habitation. Like other fantails, a very active hunter, constantly hawking and gleaning for prey. Song is a high-pitched jumble of notes given in an up-and-down series.

Medium-sized woodpecker, plain buffy-brown overall with black-and-white barring on the back. Head pattern varies across range but usually shows some combination of yellow and red. Most males on the Caribbean slope of Mexico and into Central America have a solidly red crown and nape. In flight, look for white rump. Common and conspicuous in open woodlands, deciduous forest, and arid scrub from Texas and Oklahoma south to Nicaragua. Often the default woodpecker close to human settlements. Visits backyards and feeders, especially for oranges and jelly. Hybridizes with Red-bellied Woodpecker at the northern limits of its range and with Hoffmann’s Woodpecker at the southern limits. Also compare with the smaller Yucatan Woodpecker.
