White-breasted Cuckooshrike
Ceblepyris pectoralis
Large, chunky, gray cuckooshrike with white underparts. There is a pale ring around the dark eye, giving the face a gentle appearance. Males are gray on the throat and breast, while females are white. Found in thick woodland, including miombo, often along rivers. Quiet and unobtrusive bird that is easily missed as it moves slowly through the midstory. Call is a quiet, high-pitched, descending “seeeeuup.” Similar to Gray Cuckooshrike, but has much paler underparts, and found in woodland rather than forest.

Blue-throated Brown Sunbird
Cyanomitra cyanolaema
Large, dark, long-billed sunbird. The male has an iridescent blue patch on the forehead and throat, though this can be hard to see in poor light. The yellow shoulder tufts are usually hidden. The female is drab, but has a distinctively white-striped face. Found in the canopy of low- and middle-elevation rainforest. Distinctive call is a quick, descending series of several high notes. Male is separated from similar sunbirds by more restricted blue on the face.

Makira Cicadabird
Edolisoma salomonis
Male is light powder-gray with darker wing feathers and tail and a dark patch in front of the eye. Female is powder-gray above and vivid reddish below. Prefers primary forest, and appears to avoid secondary growth and scrub. Common call is a loud “chi-beet” or “pity-you.”

Abyssinian White-eye
Zosterops abyssinicus
A small, sharp-billed warbler-like bird. Note the yellow throat, gray underparts, and narrow white spectacles around the eyes. Found in woodland, montane forest edge, mangroves, gardens, and scrub. Usually in hyperactive flocks, often joining mixed-species flocks. Similar to Heuglin’s White-eye, and some individuals are difficult to separate, but generally shows a narrower eye-ring. Most common call is a high-pitched rising rattle. Song is a quiet, chatty sequence of “chew” notes.
