Black-lored Cisticola
Cisticola nigriloris
Large, relatively colorful montane cisticola. Note the rufous cap and back of the neck, black patch between the bill and the eye, and the pale and black bands at the tip of the tail. Found in open montane habitats with thick herbaceous undergrowth, including forest edge, marsh, moist grassland, and heath. Almost always in pairs or small groups. The unmistakable song is given in chorus: a frantic up-and-down series of “squeaky wheel” notes. As with other cisticolas, habitat and vocalizations are important to identification. Fairly similar to Trilling and Singing Cisticolas, but has black lores.

Green Shrike-Vireo
Vireolanius pulchellus
Chunky, sluggish green bird of humid evergreen forest in tropical foothills and lowlands. Rarely seen, but often heard singing monotonously from the canopy. Forages mainly at middle to upper levels, at times with mixed-species feeding flocks. Plumage is bright green overall, blending well with the foliage. Note the yellow throat and stout gray bill; turquoise-blue crown usually not visible from below. Similar Blue-crowned Chlorophonia has brighter yellow belly and stubbier bill.
Barking Imperial-Pigeon
Ducula latrans
A large, long-necked, long-tailed pigeon. Body and tail brown, head and neck gray, throat and chest peachy pink. Usually solitary on large and medium islands in extensive mature forest. Similar in shape to Pacific Imperial-Pigeon, but has a gray body and green wings and is generally found on smaller islands. Most common call is an owl-like “whu!..whu!..whu!..whu!”
Montane Forest Screech-Owl
Megascops hoyi
Medium-sized owl of upland humid forest mixed with Podocarpus and alders on the east slope of the Andes from NW Argentina to central Bolivia. The only Screech-Owl through much of its range. At lower elevation sites may overlap with Tropical Screech-owl, from which it can be distinguished by its slower, longer song.
