Handsome Sunbird

A bulbul-sized olive-brown bird that sports a diagnostic red-tipped yellow bill, a red eye without an eye-wattle, and a pale buff rump. The juvenile lacks the bright bill and eye coloration but shows the pale rump. Small groups occur in savanna and farmland, where they require large wild ungulates and domestic stock to forage on; they clamber agilely over host mammals, gleaning ticks, mites and other ectoparasites, and occasionally drinking host blood. As they fly between large mammals, they give a distinctive sizzling-crackle call. The similar Red-billed Oxpecker differs from Yellow-billed Oxpecker by having a red bill, a yellow eye-wattle, and a dark rump the same color as the remainder of the upperparts.

Short-tailed canastero endemic to the Sorata vicinity in northern Bolivia. Prefers montane scrub on hillsides, but occasionally near human development and open Polylepis forest. Very similar to Creamy-breasted Canastero, but note pale face and whitish breast. Song a series of notes starting with a dry sputter, then erupting into a high and emphatic descending series of squeaks that accelerates at the end.

A colorful stubby-tailed bird, also known as “Navrang,” translated as “nine colors.” Colors are most striking when the bird is in flight. This bird has long, strong legs and a stout bill, a buffy crown with a black stripe in the middle, a black eye-stripe, and and buffy underparts with bright red on the vent. Upperparts are green, with a blue shoulder patch. It is usually seen foraging on forest floors with thick undergrowth, catching insects in leaf litter. This bird is vocal, giving its characteristic two-noted whistle call at dusk and dawn.
