Gray Vireo

Fairly common in middle level understory of tropical and subtropical forests and woodlands. Usually in small groups, mainly comprising female-plumaged birds. Associates readily with similar Red-throated Ant-Tanager when attending army ant swarms. These two species are best told by voice: high squeaky calls in Red-crowned and low rasping calls in Red-throated. Also, Red-crowned tends to forage at higher levels and its plumage is slightly paler and plainer than Red-throated, without a contrasting dark mask (male) or buffy throat (female).

Large, conspicuous, black-and-white bird; related to crows and jays. Unmistakably long tail and bold pattern, especially visible in flight. Often spotted along roadsides in open country, fields, and towns. Social and inquisitive, often in small groups foraging on the ground.

Medium-sized, slender songbird, dark above, white below; rather large for a minivet. Male has white forecrown and brow, lacking in female. In both sexes, white of breast curves up behind black ear coverts, producing a distinctive head pattern. Both also show dusky patches on the sides of the breast that make a “vested” appearance. Inhabits lowland to montane forests, where typically forages in small flocks. Gives a dry trilling call, often in flight.
