White-winged Woodpecker
Dendrocopos leucopterus
Large black-and-white woodpecker; very similar to Great Spotted Woodpecker, but with a single large and rather formless white patch dominating the entire wing instead of scattered white dots and bars. Found in waterside clusters of forest, preferring poplar stands, in the largely dry and treeless expanses of Central Asia.

Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill
Bucorvus abyssinicus
A huge ground-dwelling hornbill. Males have a mix of blue and red bare facial skin, while females have entirely blue facial skin. In flight, a large white patch is revealed in the wings. Found in savanna, grassland, and agricultural habitats, usually in pairs or small groups, walking on the ground. Breeds and roosts in trees. Similar to Southern Ground-Hornbill, but there is little overlap in range, and Abyssinian is easily separated by the blue facial skin. The call is a series of deep “boop” notes.

Santarem Parakeet
Pyrrhura amazonum
Long-tailed parakeet, mostly green with a scaled breast; has a narrow blue forehead and lacks a red patch on edge of shoulders. Feeds in small groups in the canopy of both humid non-flooded and seasonally flooded forests, as well as forest edges. Most often seen fleetingly, flying in noisy flocks through the sub-canopy. The similar Painted Parakeet has a larger blue patch on the forehead and red shoulder patch. The calls of Painted and Santarem parakeets are apparently indistinguishable.

Ochraceous-breasted Flycatcher
Nephelomyias ochraceiventris
Fairly small yellow-orange flycatcher that perches upright in humid montane forest. Olive brown above and warm yellowish orange below with white wingbars. Pairs and small groups often join mixed-species flocks. Compared to the similar Handsome Flycatcher of lower elevations, Ochraceous-breasted is brighter, with a longer tail.
