Chestnut-capped Warbler
Basileuterus delattrii
Attractive, perky warbler found in humid lowlands and foothills of Central and northern South America. Favors dense understory in forest and edge. Usually in pairs or small groups which hop around low in brush. Rather stout-billed. Also note white eyebrow, rusty cap and cheeks, and yellow underparts. Listen for high-pitched sputtering song. Once considered conspecific with Rufous-capped Warbler.

Speckled Piculet
Picumnus innominatus
Unique tiny woodpecker with olive-yellow wings, brown-and-white striped head, and black-spotted white breast and belly. Other piculets in range look very different, being mostly unmarked. Call is an extremely high “tsik tsik tsik.” Drums very loudly for such a diminutive bird. Widespread, found in lowland and foothill forests, often in areas with bamboo stands.
Ayacucho Thistletail
Asthenes ayacuchensis
Poorly known thistletail found only in a small area of the high Andes east of the city of Ayacucho in southern Peru. It is brown above, gray below, with a long wispy tail and a reddish-orange chin patch. It has a darker chin patch than Vilcabamba Thistletail and Puna Thistletail, and is not known to overlap with either species. It inhabits scrub and stunted forest near treeline. Song is a rapid, high-pitched trill.
Rufous-chested Tanager
Thlypopsis ornata
Small warblerlike tanager. Note orange head, breast, and flanks, gray-brown back, and white belly. Sexes similar. Found in montane woodland, edges, and shrubby areas in the Andes from Colombia to Peru from around 1,800–3,200 m. Usually seen in pairs, which forage in the middle levels, often with mixed-species flocks. Compare with Brown-flanked Tanager in Peru, which has duller brown flanks that contrast with orange head and breast.
