Blyth's Hawk-Eagle
Nisaetus alboniger
Medium-sized raptor of montane forests. Adult is dark brownish-black above and has heavily black-streaked white underparts. Flying adult shows broad, rounded wings and a single broad white band on the tail. Lacks the overall buffy brown tones of the much smaller adult Wallace’s Hawk-Eagle. Immature is very similar to Wallace’s but has thinner tail barring; immatures are best distinguished by altitude (Blyth’s favors higher elevations than Wallace’s) and size. Small crest is not visible in flight but may be held erect when perched.

Geelvink Cicadabird
Edolisoma meyerii
Small cuckooshrike with a restricted range, found only on Biak and Numfor Islands, off of West Papua, Indonesia. Males are uniformly blackish-gray. Females are brown on the back, gray on the head, and buff below with fine spots. Found in forest and forest edge. Vocalizations are poorly known, but include a slurred whistle given over and over. Distinctive within its small range.

Tody Motmot
Hylomanes momotula
Small and infrequently seen bird of shady forest understory in humid tropical lowlands. Rather inactive. Sits quietly, mainly at low to middle levels, and occasionally wags its tail slowly. Usually not seen until flushed, when flies off with a low whirr of wings. Note the overall drab greenish plumage with a rusty cap and bushy whitish whisker marks. Much smaller than other motmots and lacks the racket tail tips of most larger motmot species.

Saw-billed Hermit
Ramphodon naevius
Large strikingly-patterned hummingbird of the Atlantic Forest understory, but also visits feeders along forest edges. Note the distinctive bicolored bill with a hooked tip, pale eyebrow, and an orange throat bleeding into a pin-striped breast. The tail is dark with orange sides. The female is slightly smaller with a shorter and more curved bill.
