Gray-green Bushshrike
Chlorophoneus bocagei
A medium-sized arboreal bushshrike that is dark gray or black above with a white eyebrow and white underparts, sometimes with a buffy breast. Prefers disturbed and forest edge habitats with large trees, where it forages deliberately in the foliage. Often in pairs, sometimes accompanying larger species of bushshrike. Gives a rising chatter with a descending whistle at the end, as well as other chatter notes and whistles.

Oaxaca Sparrow
Aimophila notosticta
Very local and endemic to interior of Oaxaca, where replaces larger and bulkier Rusty Sparrow (no known range overlap). Favors brushy woodland and edge and oak thickets with adjacent grassy areas. Usually rather skulking, on or near the ground, but often feeds at edges early and late in the day. Sings from more conspicuous perches in bushes and trees. Note the all-black bill and strong face pattern, with black lores setting off the broken white eyering.

Fire-tailed Myzornis
Myzornis pyrrhoura
Uncommon but unmistakable inhabitant of middle- to high-altitude thickets. Bright green with fiery red tail edges, an orange throat, a black line through the eye, and flashing white dots on the wingtips. Females are slightly duller than males but are otherwise similar. Never in large numbers; usually seen singly, occasionally in pairs and trios. Often joins mixed-species foraging flocks.

White-eared Night Heron
Oroanassa magnifica
Rare and elusive night-heron with a bug-eyed, almost “alien,” appearance. Highly localized, seldom encountered far from its nesting colonies and roost sites. Black above with gray streaking on the chest and a clean white-and-orange head pattern, though this can be hard to see in poor lighting. Forages quietly in well-shaded forest streams, but most reliably seen in its small breeding colonies, usually hidden deep in a stand of bamboo or evergreen trees.
