Zanzibar Red Bishop
Euplectes nigroventris
Breeding males are spectacular birds with completely black underparts and mostly orange-red upperparts. Females and non-breeding males are brown and streaky. Breeds in moist areas including marshes, flooded grassland, and cultivated areas. Non-breeding flocks are found in many open habitats, and often mix with other species. The song is long and rattling, and the typical calls are rough “tek” notes. Breeding males are easily identified by their completely black underparts. Non-breeding males and females are very similar to other bishops, but are smaller than most other bishops, and lack the prominent yellow edges to the wing feathers of Fire-fronted Bishop.

Brown Bullfinch
Pyrrhula nipalensis
A handsome, uncommon resident of hilly forests, often quiet and difficult to locate. Adult gray above, whitish below, with gray-washed breast, blackish tail, black forecrown, and black wings with a broad pale panel near the shoulder. Juvenile much plainer, lacks black forecrown. Seen in profile, appears long-tailed and short-faced.

Elegant Crested-Tinamou
Eudromia elegans
Distinctive and striking tinamou, nearly endemic to Argentina, from northern Patagonia through the Monte desert region. Prefers open, rocky habitat. In the northern chaco replaced by similar Quebracho Crested-Tinamou. Often found by its three-part whistled song: a “twee-tyoo-too” similar to but less emphatic and more consistently pitched than Red-winged Tinamou.

Savanna Hawk
Buteogallus meridionalis
Beautiful orangish raptor with a widespread distribution across Central and South America. Overall cinnamon-colored with dark barring on the underparts. Upperparts are darker brown except for contrasting cinnamon shoulders. In flight, note white tail band and mostly cinnamon flight feathers. Immatures can be mostly whitish on the head and belly, often with heavy dark markings. Note shape (short-tailed and long-legged) and habitat. Singles or pairs are found in open habitats, often perched conspicuously on a fence post or treetop.
