Cinereous Mourner
Laniocera hypopyrra
Medium-sized gray bird of rainforest midstory. Similar to Screaming Piha and Grayish Mourner, but has small orange spots on the shoulder and narrow yellow eye ring (those species are entirely gray). Perches upright on exposed branches in the midstory of tall rainforest, and can be readily detected by its squeaky, high pitched song and calls.

Chestnut-collared Longspur
Calcarius ornatus
Sparrowlike ground-dweller; crouches low to the ground and walks with pattering footsteps. Breeding male shows beautiful chestnut nape, black-and-white head stripes, yellowish throat, and black belly. Females and nonbreeding birds are much more subtle. Tan overall with washed out face pattern, a slightly warmer nape, and indistinct streaks below. With a good view, look for shorter wingtips than other longspurs. In flight, note extensive white on edges of tail. Often found in flocks, sometimes mixed other longspurs. Breeds in grassy prairies, where males give a complex descending song. Winters in fields with short grass.

Blue-breasted Blue Flycatcher
Cyornis herioti
An attractive flycatcher of forest understory from the lowlands to low mountains in northern and central Luzon. Male has a deep blue throat, chest and upperparts, blackish face, and pale blue forehead and eyebrow. Female has a brown back, rufous wings and tail, gray head, orange throat and pale eyebrow. Male is somewhat similar to Blue-and-white Flycatcher, but Blue-breasted Blue has orange-fringed white belly. Female somewhat similar to Mugimaki female but has a gray head. Song is a high-pitch, shrill “tsiiiiiiiii!” followed by a variety of lower notes.

Curl-crested Aracari
Pteroglossus beauharnaisii
Heavy-billed small toucan of humid tropical forest. Forages in the canopy of mature rainforest, often in small groups, and sometimes with other species of aracaris. More diffuse facial pattern than other aracaris, with grayish crown covered with soft curls. Belly has a single red band. Not as vocal as other aracaris, but may be heard giving soft grunts and occasionally loud yelps, sounding rather raptor-like.
