Dybowski's Twinspot

Euschistospiza dybowskii

An unusual dark twinspot with a gray hood, a red back and rump, and large white “twin spots” on the belly. Found in areas of tall grass, both in lush savanna and along forest edge. Usually in pairs or small groups. Most similar to Brown Twinspot, but separated by many details, including the red back and the twin spots restricted to the belly. The calls are simple, often repeated “seet” and “veet” notes. The song is a variable mix of the call notes, plus high-pitched bubbling and squealing notes.

White-rumped Seedeater

White-rumped Seedeater

Crithagra leucopygia

A very plain gray-brown seedeater with a white belly and a white rump that is usually conspicuous in flight. Found in dry savanna, woodland, and cultivated areas, usually in small flocks, often mixed with other species. Similar to other seedeaters, but easily separated by the white rump. Further separated from Reichenow’s Seedeater by the plainer and less patterned face. The song is a constant stream of musical whistles and trills.

Black Scimitarbill

Black Scimitarbill

Rhinopomastus aterrimus

This all-black bird has a long, slim bill, and a fairly long tail. In flight, white bars across the wings are revealed. Birds in the eastern part of the range also have white in the outer tail, while the western birds have all-black tails. Found in a variety of savanna habitats. The call is a series of fluted, rising “wheet” notes; similar to Common Scimitarbill, but higher-pitched. Also similar in appearance to Common Scimitarbill, but there is little overlap in range, and Black is separated by its straighter bill and slightly shorter and less pointed tail. Separated from woodhoopoes by its shorter, less floppy, and squarer tail.

Sulawesi White-eye

Sulawesi White-eye

Zosterops consobrinorum

A small songbird with a bold white eye-ring, dark eyes, a green back and forehead, a yellow throat and base to undertail, and a white belly. Groups and pairs roam woods, forest edges and patches, gardens, cultivated spaces, and scrub. Confined to lowlands of southeast Sulawesi. Occurs at lower elevations than Warbling White-eye, and differs from it in the dark eye and green forehead. Separated from Lemon-bellied White-eye by the white belly. Gives a slow-paced, high-pitched descending tinkling song, “chi-chiwit-chit-cher-cher.” Also high “zit” notes.
