White-crowned Cuckoo

A plain clay-brown laughingthrush with a long, curved yellow bill. Largely without distinguishing plumage features, but note weak white brow, blue-gray tinge to the wings, and small black patches on the “elbow” and face. The only laughingthrush in much of its range. Forages in hilly and montane regions, where it often moves about noisily in medium-sized flocks in scrubby, brushy habitat, often near waterways. Long rambling song melodious and thrush-like; calls include fluid whistles, nasal chattering, and quiet peeping.

A small, long-billed, long-tailed bird of dense tangled undergrowth in lowland forest. Has olive-green wings, back, and tail, a pale belly, a gray head and chest with streaks, a rufous forehead and mask, and orange legs. Similar in habits and shape to White-browed Tailorbird, but lacks the black head and white brow. Also similar to Phillipine Leaf-Warbler, but has a longer bill and usually cocks its tail. Song is an accelerating series of slightly rising notes ending in a staccato trill.

An unusual and colorful rainforest bulbul. The back and tail are dark olive-green, the head mostly gray, and the underparts yellow. There are yellow spots at the corners of the tail. Found in the understory of rainforest, gallery forest, and lush secondary habitat. Sometimes joins mixed flocks and follows ant swarms. The calls include chirpy notes and piercing whistles. The song is a series of jolly whistles that usually descend. Similar to Green-tailed Bristlebill, but separated by the gray rather than olive-green head, as well as the lack of blue bare skin above the eye. Also similar to Red-tailed Bristlebill, but easily separated by the green tail. In the very small area of overlap with Lesser Bristlebill, separated by the gray head and the lack of a yellow spot on the face.
