Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler

Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler

Phylloscopus ruficapilla

Classic, small warbler with greenish upperparts and a yellow throat and eye stripe. Varies geographically: can show a reddish or greenish crown. Reddish-crowned birds are easily identified, but greenish-crowned birds can be confused with other warblers. Yellow-throated can still be known by the contrast between its grayish belly and bright yellow bib. Found in moist forest, mostly montane forest away from South Africa. Feeds actively in the midstory and canopy. Pretty song is variable but consists of up-and-down series of whistled notes.

Short-eared Owl

Short-eared Owl

Asio flammeus

Medium-sized owl, more frequently seen in the daytime than other owls. Especially active around dawn and dusk, when it flies lazily over open fields or marshes in search of small mammals. Varies across a wide range, with Galapagos birds being the darkest. Brown overall, palest on belly, with streaks and spots on wings and chest. Large pale patch near the wingtips easily visible in flight. Rarely heard vocalizing away from breeding grounds, where it makes a low series of hoots and a variety of harsh barking noises.

Kosrae Fruit-Dove

Kosrae Fruit-Dove

Ptilinopus hernsheimi

Brightly-colored dove found on Kosrae Island, in the eastern Carolina Islands; the only fruit-dove on its island. Adult has a bright green back and wings, a purple crown, and pale head and breast. Forages in trees and bushes, feeding primarily on fruit. Gives a series of coos that accelerate then level off; some coos are pronounced double-notes with a hiccuping quality.
