Brown-throated Sunbird
Anthreptes malacensis
This medium-sized and relatively short-billed sunbird is common throughout much of its range in open forest, forest edge, and urban areas. Look for male’s brown face, reddish throat, and blue-green crown and back. Female is plainer: note yellow underparts, gray-brown head, and faint “spectacles.” Compare with rarer Red-throated Sunbird. Sings from an exposed perch, giving a high, somewhat sparrow-like “sweet-sweet!” Calls include high “tseep” and “sweep.”

The brown-throated sunbird is a relatively large, heavy sunbird with a thick bill. Measuring some 14 centimetres (5.5 in) in length, it has a mass of 7.4–13.5 g (0.26–0.48 oz), with males averaging slightly larger than females.<p>Like most sunbirds, the male brown-throated sunbird is more colourful than the female. The male has iridescent green and purple upperparts with chestnut on the wing-coverts and scapulars; it is primarily yellow below. The female is olive-green above and yellowish below.

The brown-throated sunbird primarily feeds on nectar, but it will also take small fruits and berries. Juveniles are fed with insects.

Japanese Sparrowhawk
Tachyspiza gularis
Typical Accipiter hawk. Adult slaty gray above and finely barred with brownish orange below. Smaller and more compact-looking than Eurasian Sparrowhawk. Soaring adults can be distinguished from Chinese Sparrowhawk by the lack of dark wingtips and striped (instead of solidly pale) underwings. In all plumages, heavily marked underwing coverts distinguish this species from Chinese Sparrowhawk. Breeds in a variety of forested hill and lowland habitats; wintering birds can also be found in more open habitats, such as forest edge and fields.
Pale-bellied Tapaculo
Scytalopus griseicollis
Small and plain gray like most other Scytalopus tapaculos, but look for slightly paler belly and fairly bright tawny flanks without barring. Restricted to the eastern Andes of Colombia, from just south of Bogotá to the Venezuelan border. Acts like a mouse, scurrying around on or near the ground within montane forest and scrubby areas from around 2,000 to 3,300 m. Listen for fast, froglike trill.
Rosy-throated Longclaw
Macronyx ameliae
Beautiful pipit that is pink below and streaked brown above. The male has a bold black chest band and streaking, while the female is not as heavily marked. Found in wet grasslands, where it is generally shy and inconspicuous. Vocalizations include a two-part “dhew-dhew” call that is sometimes quickly repeated or extended into a long whistle. Separated from other longclaws by its pink underparts.
