Franklin's Gull

Leucophaeus pipixcan

Medium-sized gull with medium-gray upperparts. Breeding plumage shows black head with thick white eye arcs, large white spots on black wingtips, and deep red bill and legs. White underparts are often tinged with pink. Nonbreeding plumage has partial black hood and dark bill and legs. Juveniles have browner upperparts. Breeds around lakes and marshes in the prairies of north-central North America. Migrates through the center of the continent to and from wintering grounds in South America, where it is primarily found on the coast and offshore. Gathers in huge flocks in migration and winter. Most similar to Laughing Gull, which is slightly larger and lankier with a longer bill. Franklin’s shows thicker eye arcs and larger white spots on wingtips.

识别特征

It breeds in central provinces of Canada and adjacent states of the northern United States. It is a migratory bird, wintering in Argentina, the Caribbean, Chile, and Peru.
The summer adult's body is white and its back and wings are much darker grey than all other gulls of similar size except the larger laughing gull. The wings have black tips with an adjacent white band. The bill and legs are red. The black hood of the breeding adult is mostly lost in winter.
Young birds are similar to the adult but have less developed hoods and lack the white wing band. They take three years to reach maturity.
Measurements:

分布与栖息地

Although the bird is uncommon on the coasts of North America, it occurs as a rare vagrant to northwest Europe, south and west Africa, Australia and Japan, with a single record from Eilat, Israel, in 2011 (Smith 2011), and a single record from Larnaca, Cyprus, July 2006. At the beginning of 2017 has been observed also in Southern Romania, southeast Europe.

行为

They are omnivores like most gulls, and they will scavenge as well as seeking suitable small prey. In the spring, on rivers such as the Bow River large groups will float with the current, sipping the emerging insect hatch. The behaviour includes floating through a particular stretch and returning repeatedly to the same section.
The birds breed in colonies near prairie lakes with the nest constructed on the ground, or sometimes floating. The two or three eggs are incubated for about three weeks.

Rook

Rook

Corvus frugilegus

Large, glossy black crow. Adult is easily passed off as another crow species unless you see the diagnostic pale patch at the base of the bill. Juvenile lacks a pale bill base and is very similar to Carrion Crow, but bill is a little more tapered; pale bill base develops late in its first winter. Inhabits farmland and other semiopen areas with hedges and groups of tall trees, where nests in rookeries. Forages on ground, usually in flocks, and associates readily with crows and jackdaws. Rook calls are higher pitched and less rolling than other crow calls.

Antarctic Petrel

Antarctic Petrel

Thalassoica antarctica

Striking brown-and-white petrel of Antarctica and its adjacent seas and islands. Essentially unmistakable, but worth comparing with Cape Petrel if seen at great distance. Breeds on rocky slopes and cliff faces, both coastal and inland; one of very few flying birds likely to be seen any distance inland in Antarctica. When not breeding, disperses north, sometimes getting as far as the Falklands. Often seen in huge numbers around foraging cetaceans or fishing vessels.

Eastern Screech-Owl

Eastern Screech-Owl

Megascops asio

Small, stocky owl with large head and no neck. Pointed ear tufts are often raised. Varies in color from gray to bright rufous (reddish-brown). Intricate pattern is perfect for camouflage against tree bark. Yellow eyes. Active at night when they prey on small birds and mammals. More often heard than seen; listen for its descending whinny and longer trill. Roosts and nests in cavities, including nest boxes. Found in a variety of habitats with trees, particularly near water.
