Ashambu Laughingthrush

A small, long-tailed lorikeet. Green body with black upper tail, red rump and a red bill. The male has a red forehead, violet-blue cheek and a red patch in front of the shoulder whereas the female has some yellow-streaking behind the eye. Very similar to Red-flanked Lorikeet, but male Red-fronted has a red patch on the forehead rather than chin and has less pronounced yellow wing bar in flight. Voice, a series of sharp, high-pitch, arhythmic “tsik!” notes.

Small, slim, crested member of the monarch family. The male has a black hood, a large crest, and a variable white patch in the wing. The female is plainer and greyer, with a reduced crest and less white in the wing. Found in the midstory of forest, from low to high elevations. Restless bird that often joins mixed feeding flocks. Call is a zinging “zree-zre-zre”. Song is a long, musical series of hollow notes. The very pale underparts and white mark on the wing are separate it from other crested-flycatchers.

A splendid medium-sized inhabitant of woodlands; often found in pairs. Its iridescent blue-green back, smooth gray chest, and brilliant red belly easily distinguish it from all other species in range. Usually sits motionless near the middle level of the forest, but when feeding (typically on flowers and fruit) hovers conspicuously. Often found by its loud calls, which are somewhat varied. One common call is a “cu-cu-cu-cu-cu-cu,” often accelerating; another is a resonant quavering “cu-u-low,” given several times in succession.
