Palau Kingfisher
Todiramphus pelewensis
A distinctive small kingfisher, white below with greenish-blue wings and a purplish-blue back. Shows a greenish cheek, a black eye-stripe extending behind the head, and an orange-rufous cap. Found in a wide variety of habitats including mangroves, wooded lowlands, plantations, and large gardens. Replaced by Pacific Kingfisher on the coast, but unlikely to be confused with it. Relatively quiet, but often gives a chattering ”che-che-che, che-kreek, kreek, kreek” at dawn and dusk.

Spotted Antbird
Hylophylax naevioides
Stunning antbird, small and boldly patterned. Rotund and short-tailed. Male has white belly with band of black spots across chest, gray head, and rufous back. Female more washed out, but similar pattern. Usually seen singly or in pairs in understory of forest, often following a mixed flock or army ant swarm. Stuttered song is a series of slightly wheezy whistles, descending in pitch.

Española Mockingbird
Mimus macdonaldi
Large gray-and-white songbird with a long tail, curved bill, black mask and mustache, and dark blotches on the underparts. Endemic to Galálapagos. Found only on the southeastern island of Española, where it is the only mockingbird. Very inquisitive and has almost no fear of people. Lone birds or small groups race around beaches boldly inspecting almost everything they encounter including shells, sea lions, cameras, and shoes. Often perches up on bushes or rocks.

Barred Puffbird
Nystalus radiatus
An unobtrusive bird with an oversized head and bill. Look for tiger-striped pattern—warm cinnamon-brown overall with uneven black barring. Also note slightly darker cap and staring pale eye. Uncommon; found around forest edge and secondary woodland in the lowlands from Panama to western Ecuador. Perches still for long periods of time, often on an exposed perch. Frequently detected by distinctive wolf-whistling calls.
